Some Thanksgiving smiles arrive before dinner does.
There’s the person at the door holding a dessert that apparently “didn’t turn out,” although everyone is already looking for a fork. The child proudly announcing they helped cook, with supporting evidence all over their shirt. The familiar face coming up the driveway.
Then there’s the smile exchanged across the kitchen when someone asks whether everything will be ready at the same time.
An ambitious question. Let’s see how the potatoes behave.
For those gathering this Thanksgiving, these small moments are part of the pleasure: familiar company, something good in the oven, and conversations that carry on while somebody finds another chair.
At Kelowna Dental Solutions, we spend our working days thinking about teeth and helping people care for them. But a holiday gathering offers another view of a smile: the one that appears in the middle of a story, a greeting, or a particularly good piece of pie.
There’s plenty to smile about around a Thanksgiving table.
Someone tells the family story everyone knows, and everyone listens anyway. A usually quiet guest delivers the funniest line of the afternoon. A young kitchen helper receives an extremely serious compliment on their contribution to the carrots.
These smiles happen easily, often while we’re paying attention to someone else.
That’s part of what makes them so lovely to see.
Eventually, someone says, “We should get a picture.”
This is when a relaxed gathering briefly becomes a production.
People shuffle together. Someone is still chewing. The person setting the timer presses something, looks puzzled, and announces that it’s definitely working now.
It isn’t.
When the camera finally cooperates, some people grin, some smile with their lips together, and someone inevitably looks towards the dog.
For anyone who feels self-conscious about their teeth, the camera can change the mood a little. That’s a familiar feeling, and one we recognize in dentistry. It doesn’t need to become a topic of conversation at dinner.
A quick “Everyone happy with this one?” before sharing the photo leaves room for people to have a say.
Then the phone can go away, the conversation can resume, and whoever was promised the last slice of pie can make their case.
We recognize there are generous little gestures woven through a gathering, especially at times like Thanksgiving..
Someone remembers a guest’s favourite dish. Someone brings containers because they know the host always sends food home. Another person starts washing up without waiting to be asked.
A friend checks whether there’s room for one more. A neighbour drops something off. A phone call connects people who couldn’t make the trip.
Those moments give gratitude something concrete: people taking the time to think of one another.
They’re also part of what we appreciate about being a community dental practice. We get to know people over time, hear a little about their lives, and help care for something that matters to their everyday comfort. The trust involved in that relationship means a great deal to our team.
We know this weekend is observed in different ways, or not at all. We respect the different meanings it holds across cultures, faiths, and Indigenous communities.
To everyone celebrating, we wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving. However you spend the weekend, we hope it brings good company, a little rest, and something that makes you smile.
From all of us at Kelowna Dental Solutions, thank you to our patients and neighbours for being part of our community.
And good luck with the group photo. We believe in you, even if the phone timer has other plans.
