When you look in the mirror, does it look like your gums may be receding and your roots are becoming exposed? Receding gums are a common dental issue, and many people wonder how it is caused.
Twenty years ago, the go-to response was that receding gums are caused by improper brushing techniques. However, this doesn’t explain the lack of bleeding or raw gum tissue, different levels of gum loss on teeth that are right next to each other, and the loss of bone that also occurs.
Today, we understand that receding gums are more likely caused by pressure. For example, if you were to wiggle or apply too much pressure to fence posts, the supporting dirt would loosen and become damaged, and the posts themselves could become damaged as well. In the case of your mouth, your teeth are the fence posts, and your gums and bone are the supporting ground.
This pressure can be caused by teeth grinding (bruxism) or a misaligned bite. Gum disease and genetics can also contribute to or worsen receding gums.
Whatever the mix of causes, if you have receding gums it’s important to book an appointment with your dentist and have it looked after right away to avoid further damage and potential tooth loss.
